It was an ordinary Monday. I woke up and ate breakfast, as usual. Then, as usual, my mother gave me the grocery list for the week and some bus money. I always helped my mother out with errands and chores because she is very sick, and cannot do many on her own. I then told my mom that I'd be back in a couple hours, then I left. As I got in line for the bus stop I pondered what news Eric would bring me, for he rides the bus everyday out of having nothing to do at his house. When the bus arrived I payed for my ride and then walked to the back row of seats that I usually sat in. When I got there, however, instead of the typical graffiti covered chairs that I always found, I came across a diamond necklace. Or, at least, it appeared to be real diamond. Rumor has it there's only one way to tell if something is real diamond or not. You must scratch the diamond on a window, if the rock leaves a mark, it is a true diamond. If the rock leaves the window clean, you only have a worthless stone. It was destruction of property, but if it was a real diamond, then I could pay to have the window fixed. Besides, I doubt that anyone would even notice a small scratch on a city bus window. So I scratched the diamond on the window... It left a large mark. It was real diamond! I was rich! I can now use my new found wealth to pay for my mother's medical bills. I then sat there in disbelief until the bus stopped near Eric's house. As usual, Eric got on the bus and walked all the way to the back to sit by me. I wasn't sure weather I should tell Eric or not. He might try to tell me that I should give him the necklace or maybe he would even be selfish enough to steal it. But Eric's a nice guy, and he knows that my mother needs the money. Besides, I'm just so thrilled.
"Hi," Eric says plainly.
"What's up?" I asked in return hoping that he didn't have much to say and that he would only return the question.
"None more than the usual. What's new with you?" Eric replied to my relief.
"I found a diamond necklace today! Now I can afford to help my mom get better," I said with joy.
"Wow! That's cool. Don't you think, though that who ever this necklace belongs to is going to want it back? There's almost no doubt that they'd give you a large cash reward," Eric said. I knew that he would find some way to make this disappointing to me.
"Yes, I do think that they would want it back and they probably would give me a cash reward, but I'm sure that the diamond is worth more money. I really need the money, Eric," I replied, wining a little bit.
